Upgrading Monthly Supporters to Memberships

You can now automatically upgrade existing monthly supporters to your membership tiers.

Memberships are a more flexible way of building a recurring income. They encourage monthly commitments and give creators more ways to offer benefits and rewards. Learn more about Memberships here.

 

Upgrade Monthly Supporters

The option to “Upgrade My Monthly Supporters” will appear if:

  • you have existing monthly supporters
  • you have set up at least 1 membership tier at a price point equal to or below the amount the monthly supporter paid

By clicking “Upgrade My Monthly Supporters”, all eligible supporters will be automatically assigned to the minimum tier available based on the amount they most recently paid.

How will Monthly Supporters be notified of the upgrade?

Each monthly supporter will receive an email notifying them they are now a member of one of your tiers (we use your chosen tier name in the email).

 

How are tiers assigned?

Monthly supporters are automatically assigned to a tier based on the amount they most recently paid. The amount you receive from each supporter will not change when they become members.

Example: You have 3 monthly supporters you want to upgrade to Members.

  • Supporter A pays $1 per month,
  • Supporter B pays $9 per month,
  • Supporter C pays $12 per month.

If you set up $3, $5, $10, and $15 tiers and choose "Upgrade My Monthly Supporters":

  • Supporter A remains a monthly supporter at $1 with access to content for "All Monthly Supporters".
  • Supporter B joins the $5 tier, continues to pay $9 monthly, and gains access to content for All Monthly Supporters and $5 tier.
  • Supporter C joins the $10 tier, continues to pay $12 per month (tiers have a minimum price, not a fixed price).

FAQ

Can monthly supporters join a tier?

Yes, but joining a tier doesn't cancel their monthly payment. They need to cancel it separately. Point them to our guide for cancellation here.

Can converted members change their tier?
Yes, they can change tiers on your Memberships page. When changing tiers, price differences for upgrades or downgrades are not refunded at the point of purchase, although the previous tier will be canceled.
Can members change how much they pay?

Yes, they can change their pledge if it's above the tier's minimum price. You can point them to our guide here to change their pledge.

Changing the pledge doesn't move them to a higher tier automatically; they must subscribe to the new tier.

What if I revert back to simply monthly donations?
Reverting affects only new subscribers. Existing members remain on their tiers until you or the member cancel the subscription. Follow our guide here.
